Civet – All About The Oil And Animal

Civet Essential Oil…You think you know all about it?

Probably after you read this…you won’t say so…

Derived from the Latin name of a species of Civet cat…Civet is a wonderful medicine…Civet oil…which is the secretion of civet cat…has been used for many years by tribal medical practitioners of South Indian forests for treatment of pimples and wrinkles…The magical effect of the civet oil is useful in getting relief from

  • Pimple
  • Acne
  • Freckles
  • Wrinkles
  • Pigmentation
  • Sunburns

Civet oil is derived from civets…a tropical tree-dwelling mammal…They can be found in Africa and Asia…Civets are cat-like animals…and belong to the order Feliformia…which also holds

  • Lions
  • Tigers
  • Hyenas
  • Domestic cats

The oil is used in some perfumes…

Civet oil is sometimes referred to as civet musk…because it has similar properties to musk

Civet oil cannot ethically be used…and is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans alike…

Because Civet is a musk like fragrance…it can be used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…but is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits…Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavours of energy to the fore…This is a pure anointing oil for external use only…

The African civet lives in savannahs and forests of South & Central Africa…ranging from Senegal to Somalia and south to Namibia and eastern South Africa…The Indian civet ranges from Indochina to China…It can be found in the countries of Nepal…Bangladesh..the Malay peninsula…and Vietnam…
Both species produce the so-called civet…an oily substance secreted by the animals to mark their territory…Civet has a penetrating and strongly faecal smell of carnivore…partly due to skatole…On ageing and upon dilution…a pleasant animal-musky odour develops…highly valued in perfumery…For this reason the animals are kept in cages…and the fresh secretion is taken from the pouches at weekly intervals…It is said that King Solomon’s supply of musk came from East Africa….Fortunately…the animal musk trade has declined over the years due to the availability of modern synthetic musk of nature-identical or -similar character…

Civet – The Majestic Animal Smell

The animal Civet is no doubt very majestic…More so because of the expensive benefits it does to us…I mean the expensive provisions we are bestowed upon by this animal…

Civet is a musk like fragrance…it can be used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…but is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits…Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavours of energy to the fore….This is a pure anointing oil for external use only…

Though little is known about its biology and ecology…there are some descriptions of habitat use…it once inhabited lowland forests…lowland swamp and riparian forests in the coastal plain districts of Western Ghats – although now it appears to be confined to thickets in cashew plantations and to highly degraded lowland forests in northern Kerala…It has been found in lowland riparian forests in the coastal plain districts…The species is nocturnal and probably elusive

Natural forests have completely disappeared in the entire stretch of coastal Western Ghats…thus the present vegetation is of secondary origin and is mostly plantations…Of these…cashew plantations are the least disturbed…as they are not weeded…providing a dense understory of shrubs and grasses for this terrestrial species to take refuge in…However….most records from 1960-1990 were in valleys around riparian areas…suggesting that this species is dependent of shallow water courses where it may forage at night…

Civet oil is derived from civets…The animal I had been talking about in this article….They can be found in Africa and Asia….Civets are cat-like animals…and belong to the order Feliformia…which also holds –

  • Lions
  • Tigers
  • Hyenas
  • Domestic cats

The oil is used in some perfumes…

Civet oil is sometimes referred to as civet musk…because it has similar properties to musk….

Foods…Gourmet…Civet

I won’t be surprised to see you get surprised at reading this surprising fact about Civet that they are consumed whole-sum too…I know some of you would be disgusted at the idea…others, inquisitive…and some just would like to read ahead…I’ll help each one of you…Simply read on…

You know Civet right? Yes I mean the same nocturnal animal…from the Viverridae family…found in Africa…and the East Indies…It is approximately 17-28 inches in length…excluding its long tail…and weighs about 3 to 10 pounds…

Although classified within the Carnivera order…the palm civet of Southern Asia (it’s actually named so because it can be found in palms)…is a fruit-eating mammal…Although the Viverridae family is distantly related to the Felidae family of which the common domestic cat is a member…the civet “cat” is not a cat…Indeed…it is more related to the mongoose than to any cat…

The civet is a cunning-looking little animal…with

  • Catlike body
  • Long legs
  • Long tail
  • Masked face resembling a raccoon or weasel

In some areas of the world…it has become an endangered species…hunted for its fur or as a food source…The civet’s taste for fruit has been its downfall in at least one area of southeast Asia…as early as the 18th century…the durian fruit was also called “civet fruit” because it was used as bait for catching civets….

The civet not only is fond of fruit…but has had a love-hate relationship with growers of a particular coffee bean in Viet Nam…Civets love this bean…and search out the tastiest examples with their long…fox-like nose….The hardiest beans survive the digestive process of the civet…and are prized in caphe cut chon…or fox-dung coffee Vietnamese call the civet “fox”…

Non-Kosher (just in case you were wondering)…Civet is used in

  • Beverages
  • Candy
  • Pastries
  • Gum
  • Ice cream

It is derived from the unctuous secretion from the gland receptacles between the anus and genitalia of both male and female African Civet-cats (Viverra civetta)…

As a matter of fact….These wild animals are considered great delicacies in China…and are also bred there for human consumption…Kept in squalid surroundings…stacked cage upon cage…they can be found in markets throughout southern China…

Roasting The Most Expensive Coffee – Civet

It’s not all that great to simply consume anything and everything blindly…Knowing about it thoroughly is of great help to avoid mishaps…

Civet coffee….Kopi Luwak is the world’s most expensive coffee….It is also known as coffee alamid or civet coffee….Know how it is obtained…? No I have no intentions of jerking you in your seat but just to inform you….It is made from droppings of civet cats…These cats select and eat ripe coffees…It is believed that digestive juices degrade beans’ proteins to amino acids that contribute to its unique flavour during roasting…The coffee is also less bitter because it begins to germinate inside civet stomach…

It’s hard to gather civet droppings in a wide coffee farms…Some farmers engaged in raising civet cats to produce more coffee alamid…Civet cats are fed with ripe coffee beans….Droppings are collected…washed and dried

I’ll give you some handy tips in case you want to engage in civet coffee production…You probably want to roast your own coffee….It cannot be roasted in commercial roasting machine because such equipment has high volume capacity….Your precious coffee will get burnt in no time….Getting a two kilogram capacity drum roaster is a great idea but it might be too expensive…On the other hand, there are cheaper alternatives….Read on…

1. The common thing to all coffee roasters is heat…Basically…roasting is get done through heating…Now is the time to get your frying fan…Roast a measure amount of coffee over a low fire with continuous stirring…Slow roasting over a low fire is more controllable than fast roasting over high flame…

2. Ask a nearby machine shop to build a small and simple drum roaster…Drum rotation can be manually operated or machine controlled…A candy thermometer maybe installed for more accurate roasting…

3. Coffee can be roasted in stove top corn popper….Put a measured amount of coffee and roast it like popping a corn…Candy thermometer installed will give more roasting control…

Richest Cup Of Coffee – Civet

There is no doubt about the fact that a nicely prepared cup of hot and rich-smelling coffee can be luring…And something that adds on to the lure is undoubtedly the quality of the coffee beans…You know like the more pure and rich they are…the more tempting the beverage becomes…

One type of coffee that adheres…in fact…supersedes the above mentioned qualities of a good coffee is certainly…Civet coffee…

The magical flavour and aroma of the lip-smacking Civet Coffee or Kopi Luwak…as it is known popularly…reveals the romantic story of its provenance…You know how it works? It’s that this Asian Palm Civet eats the beans of the coffee berries…The beans then pass through the digestive tract of the civet and there proteolytic enzymes seep in to the beans….As a result…more amino acid and shorter peptides are formed…The beans pass through the intestines of the civet and are later defecated….These beans are then –

  • Gathered
  • Thoroughly washed
  • Sundried
  • Roasted
  • Brewed

All this…to give you that extremely delectable coffee…

The less bitter taste and alluring aroma of Civet Coffee make it one of the most sought after and most expensive coffees in the world…Chiefly produced on the rich islands of

  • Java
  • Sumatra
  • Sulawesi
  • Bali in the archipelago of Indonesia
  • Philippines

Actually it is mainly because….of the increasing popularity of civet coffee and the high income it brings…civet farming has become a custom for the local community who earlier hunted them…Civets are fed raw berries lavishly and the coffee beans are gathered from the faeces produced….Civets eat the coffee cherries for their fruit pulp and pass the coffee beans inside…Enzymes in their stomach when work on these beans add the soothing aroma and flavour to them….

Most Exotic Coffee Ever Made – Civet

For the actual lovers of this beverage called ‘coffee’…The senses…the taste buds are never satiated…Instead their craving increases with every passing hour..

I have had so many friends who were absolute caffeine addicts…So much that they would get up in the middle of the night (literally) and go somewhere…I wondered if they were possessed! I had to follow them and used to find them preparing coffee for themselves…The ones who were pretty well-off…used to name brands of coffee I had never heard before in life…There was this friend of mine whose father was businessman…I remember whenever I used to go to her place to see her..she used to serve me this exotic and irresistibly rich and creamy smelling coffee…I too soon became the fan of the beverage…thanks to her religious serving…I asked her which coffee it was…though knowing that I would surely not have heard the name before…”Civet” she replied…

I searched for it and found ample information…about Civet coffee of course…In Indonesia…the country best known for this type of coffee…”kopi luwak” translates literally as “civet coffee.”…And just to clarify…Kopi Luwak is a process…not a type of coffee…

As a matter of fact…Most coffees are either named after the species or region or both take for example…

  • Lintong Arabica
  • Kona
  • Sulawesi Toraja Peaberry
  • Costa Rican Terrazu

And my tongue will get tangled in an attempt to pronounce these!

Anyway…There are four coffee species grown commercially…and hundreds of coffee growing regions…It refers to any coffee that has been consumed by a Palm Civet…a shy and peaceful relative of the mongoose that is found primarily in Indonesia and the Philippines…Palm Civets (formally called…Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) are of the civet family and are not actually cats…foxes or weasels

Any coffee bean consumed by a civet becomes “kopi luwak.”…If one civet is eating Arabica and another is eating Robusta…the flavour profile of each coffee will be quite different….However…both coffees will share the unique characteristics brought about by the enzyme action –

  • hints of chocolate
  • absence of bitterness
  • accentuated flavour profile
  • uniquely pleasant persistence on the palate

These changes have been documented and catalogued by a number of university studies…

Kopi Luwak coffees are such that enable you to experience the Kopi Luwak process on all four of the major commercial species of coffee and several different cultivating regions…

Basically…Coffee grows as a seed inside a fruit that resembles a cherry…The Palm Civet is a night-time forager who considers the ripest and sweetest coffee cherries to be a delicacy…which she swallows whole…She only wants the fruit…so the hard green coffee beans are passed through undigested…They are then gathered up…thoroughly cleaned…and roasted like regular coffee beans…Palm Civets have unique natural enzymes in their bellies that permeate the celluloid structure of the hard coffee beans and make it possible for the release during brewing of up to 25 or more otherwise unreachable flavour elements….Also…they neutralize many of the coffee’s bitter oils…

The result is the world’s smoothest and most flavourful coffee…with exceptionally pleasant recall on the senses…a rare effect that is experienced only with the finest and freshest coffees…

Civet Coffee – The Best Experience

No experience can match that of sipping the costliest…most exotic and mind-blowing smell coffee…A coffee in the true sense…I can’t bet if you know it or you don’t but people around the globe…crazy about coffee…are ready to pay bags full of bucks just to sip on the finest taste of coffee…And whenever they halted at Civet…apparently they were ready to pay extra just to get some handful of the authentic and rarest coffee ever made and tasted….

 To name it….I’d say nothing more…Civet coffee…

Before we get into the details of the coffee…understand Civet…Civet is a musk like fragrance…it can be used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…but is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits….Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavors of energy to the fore….This is a pure anointing oil for external use only….

The topmost choice of grand hotels is to serve their guests the finest coffee that could be ever made…Civet Coffee….This is quite possibly the most expensive coffee in the world… It’s produced in the most revolting and extraordinary way….The Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus)…I have to confess to you that I’m not exactly sure what a civet is…the furry critter looks a bit like a rodent-weasel cross…it may even have something to do with cats….It has a tail…Anyway…the civet munches away on coffee berries…which then pass through the digestive tract…before being “defecated” into clumps…The droppings are collected…washed…dried in the sun and given a light roasting….

You know what is it like to sip the coffee made with Civet….Very rich in taste…utterly smooth…almost like drinking a cup of dark chocolate…surprisingly fruity…(as Her Majesty might have said)…hints of strawberry…All that chemical stuff churning around in the civet’s stomach seems to have a beneficial effect on the taste of the bean…eliminating all traces of bitterness…Aesthetically…the coffee is pleasing too…thick and deeply black in colour….It was truly divine…the nectar of the gods…

Less Known Of Civet

I am pretty sure the points I’ll be presenting before you today about Civet…are not known to you…Read and get surprised…

Each African Civet secretes up to 4g of musk every week…which is normally collected from African Civets in the wild…However…the capturing and keeping of African Civets for their musk is not unknown and is said to be an incredibly cruel industry….Today…few perfumes still contain actual musk from the glands of an African Civet as many scents today are easily reproduced artificially…Although it is a protected yet not an endangered animal…the African Civet populations have also been severely affected by Human hunters…who hunt these little carnivores to simply add their skin to the trophy cabinet….

The African Civet is found in a variety of habitats on the African continent…with its range extending from coast to coast in sub-Saharan Africa….African Civets are most commonly found in tropical forests and jungles and areas where there is plenty of dense vegetation to provide both cover and animals that the African Civets feeds on….African Civets are never found in arid regions and always must be in an area which has a good water source….Despite this though…it is not uncommon for African Civets to be found along rivers that lead into the more arid regions…They are capable swimmers and often spend their time hunting and resting in the trees as well as on the ground…

The African Civet is a solitary animal that only comes out under the cover of night to hunt and catch food….These nocturnal animals are primarily tree-dwelling creatures that spend most of the daylight hours resting in the safety of the trees high above….African Civets tend to be most active just after sunset but tend to hunt in areas that still provide plenty of cover….Despite being generally very solitary creatures…the African Civet has been known to gather in groups of up to 15 members particularly during the mating season….They are also highly territorial animalsmarking their boundaries with the scent released by their perineal glands….

Civet – The Cat

Know the about the wild and amazing cat Civet?

Very frankly…I had not even heard about it before…Read the name first time in some fashion magazine that bore information about ladies perfume…Initially I thought it had something to do just with oils…Later I realized as to where that oil was obtained from…Civet cat…

Hmm…This African Civet is a large species of Civet found across sub-Saharan Africa….The African Civet is the only remaining member in its genetic group and is considered to be the largest Civet-like animal on the African continent….Despite their cat-like appearance and behaviours…the African Civets are not felines at all but are in fact…more closely related to other small carnivores including Weasels and MongoosesThe African Civet is most well known for the musk that it secretes to mark its territory called Civetone…which has been used in the manufacturing of perfumes for centuries…and it’s striking black and white markings…make the African Civet one of the easiest Civet species to identify…

One of the African Civet’s most distinctive features are the black and white markings on their fur and grey face…which along with the black band around their eyes…gives these animals a Raccoon-like appearance….The similarity is only heightened by the fact that the African Civet’s hind legs are quite a bit longer than the front legs…making its stance very different to that of a Mongoose….The average adult African Civet has a body length of around 70cm with nearly the same length tail on top of that….The paws of the African Civet each have five digits with non-retractable claws to enable the Civet to move about in the trees more easily…

The musk secreted by the glands close to the African Civet’s reproductive organs has been collected by Humans for hundreds of years…In its concentrated form,…the smell is said to be quite offensive to people…but much more pleasant once diluted…It was this scent that became one of the ingredients in some of the most expensive perfumes in the world and made the African Civet a well-known African animal…African Civets are known to carry the rabies disease…which is contracted through contact with an already infected animal….The African Civet is also known to use designated areas around its territory…where it is able to go to the toilet…

Magical Civet Oil

Do you believe in magic?

Okay I don’t mean like the one that makes people float in air…or turns a hen into dollars…or a fat guy into a mouse but like…something that might seem obvious and not so great…unless and until you probe deeper in to it…just to feel amazed and awestruck…

Okay…I’ll come closer to the point…Do you often wish that there were something on this earth that would make you forgot your past agonies and bring colder to your fantasies…to a world…of your own…where you rule…you are the ultimate king…and things happen the way you want them to happen…Slipping into the oblivion…and being the most carefree being and the luckiest one too with all wishes of yours being granted at just the mention of them…?

Okay…That was a tad too exaggerated! But I won’t deny the fact…that things close to these…do happen…If nothing more than I’d say nature always had everything for us in its store…some we misused…others we exploited…and we ignored…But one thing that continues to be the best of nature’s magical bounty is Civet Oil….The smell…

Pheromones sexually attractant hormones…function through the olfactory system without the nose acknowledging the existence of a smell…the smell of hospitals sprayed into a room in such minute quantities that the nose could not detect it…measurably raised the anxiety levels of individuals in that environment…

There’s an intriguing background to it…Some years ago…a perfumer working on synthetic musk discovered a substance which improved his sense of smell one hundred times….The government confiscated his papers…closed down his laboratory and told him not to do it again….This sinister episode plainly demonstrates the seriousness with which the establishment views the sense of smell…presumably for purposes of control …on a more down to earth level…years of working with essential oils have demonstrated to me that certain vibrations within the spectrum of smell have repeatable…almost universal…effects….

Just take this example…sandalwood…no matter who is smelling it…has a sedative effect….Lemongrass always wakes people up…Smells also have power by suggestion and…in pragmatic magical systems…it is a combination of these two principles…nature and association which is used in solo and group magic…

The building up of a ‘smellphabet’….a contrived system of smell attributions…is something which can be only done at the individual level…it is not the function of the group…Such a system would consist of as many evocative smells from the past that the individual can think of and recreate…

Consider this…A magician…as a child…once had a fight with another boy on his way home from school….The fight took place near a patch of wild garlic and…ever since that time…whenever he smells garlic the emotion of the occasion comes rushing back….He now views this emotion as an aspect of the energy of Mars and consequently uses garlic in incenses of a martial type….The same magician has gone through this procedure with all his emotions….Ambergris is used in his Venus incense because it recalls the smell at the stable where he first made love….Frankincense is used only in incenses which are not intended to produce a violent emotional reaction because he finds it soothing….I am giving you examples of other things as well so that you understand my point better…
