Civet – All About The Oil And Animal

Civet Essential Oil…You think you know all about it?

Probably after you read this…you won’t say so…

Derived from the Latin name of a species of Civet cat…Civet is a wonderful medicine…Civet oil…which is the secretion of civet cat…has been used for many years by tribal medical practitioners of South Indian forests for treatment of pimples and wrinkles…The magical effect of the civet oil is useful in getting relief from

  • Pimple
  • Acne
  • Freckles
  • Wrinkles
  • Pigmentation
  • Sunburns

Civet oil is derived from civets…a tropical tree-dwelling mammal…They can be found in Africa and Asia…Civets are cat-like animals…and belong to the order Feliformia…which also holds

  • Lions
  • Tigers
  • Hyenas
  • Domestic cats

The oil is used in some perfumes…

Civet oil is sometimes referred to as civet musk…because it has similar properties to musk

Civet oil cannot ethically be used…and is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans alike…

Because Civet is a musk like fragrance…it can be used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…but is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits…Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavours of energy to the fore…This is a pure anointing oil for external use only…

The African civet lives in savannahs and forests of South & Central Africa…ranging from Senegal to Somalia and south to Namibia and eastern South Africa…The Indian civet ranges from Indochina to China…It can be found in the countries of Nepal…Bangladesh..the Malay peninsula…and Vietnam…
Both species produce the so-called civet…an oily substance secreted by the animals to mark their territory…Civet has a penetrating and strongly faecal smell of carnivore…partly due to skatole…On ageing and upon dilution…a pleasant animal-musky odour develops…highly valued in perfumery…For this reason the animals are kept in cages…and the fresh secretion is taken from the pouches at weekly intervals…It is said that King Solomon’s supply of musk came from East Africa….Fortunately…the animal musk trade has declined over the years due to the availability of modern synthetic musk of nature-identical or -similar character…

Civet – The Majestic Animal Smell

The animal Civet is no doubt very majestic…More so because of the expensive benefits it does to us…I mean the expensive provisions we are bestowed upon by this animal…

Civet is a musk like fragrance…it can be used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…but is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits…Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavours of energy to the fore….This is a pure anointing oil for external use only…

Though little is known about its biology and ecology…there are some descriptions of habitat use…it once inhabited lowland forests…lowland swamp and riparian forests in the coastal plain districts of Western Ghats – although now it appears to be confined to thickets in cashew plantations and to highly degraded lowland forests in northern Kerala…It has been found in lowland riparian forests in the coastal plain districts…The species is nocturnal and probably elusive

Natural forests have completely disappeared in the entire stretch of coastal Western Ghats…thus the present vegetation is of secondary origin and is mostly plantations…Of these…cashew plantations are the least disturbed…as they are not weeded…providing a dense understory of shrubs and grasses for this terrestrial species to take refuge in…However….most records from 1960-1990 were in valleys around riparian areas…suggesting that this species is dependent of shallow water courses where it may forage at night…

Civet oil is derived from civets…The animal I had been talking about in this article….They can be found in Africa and Asia….Civets are cat-like animals…and belong to the order Feliformia…which also holds –

  • Lions
  • Tigers
  • Hyenas
  • Domestic cats

The oil is used in some perfumes…

Foods…Gourmet…Civet

I won’t be surprised to see you get surprised at reading this surprising fact about Civet that they are consumed whole-sum too…I know some of you would be disgusted at the idea…others, inquisitive…and some just would like to read ahead…I’ll help each one of you…Simply read on…

You know Civet right? Yes I mean the same nocturnal animal…from the Viverridae family…found in Africa…and the East Indies…It is approximately 17-28 inches in length…excluding its long tail…and weighs about 3 to 10 pounds…

Although classified within the Carnivera order…the palm civet of Southern Asia (it’s actually named so because it can be found in palms)…is a fruit-eating mammal…Although the Viverridae family is distantly related to the Felidae family of which the common domestic cat is a member…the civet “cat” is not a cat…Indeed…it is more related to the mongoose than to any cat…

The civet is a cunning-looking little animal…with

  • Catlike body
  • Long legs
  • Long tail
  • Masked face resembling a raccoon or weasel

In some areas of the world…it has become an endangered species…hunted for its fur or as a food source…The civet’s taste for fruit has been its downfall in at least one area of southeast Asia…as early as the 18th century…the durian fruit was also called “civet fruit” because it was used as bait for catching civets….

The civet not only is fond of fruit…but has had a love-hate relationship with growers of a particular coffee bean in Viet Nam…Civets love this bean…and search out the tastiest examples with their long…fox-like nose….The hardiest beans survive the digestive process of the civet…and are prized in caphe cut chon…or fox-dung coffee Vietnamese call the civet “fox”…

Non-Kosher (just in case you were wondering)…Civet is used in

  • Beverages
  • Candy
  • Pastries
  • Gum
  • Ice cream

It is derived from the unctuous secretion from the gland receptacles between the anus and genitalia of both male and female African Civet-cats (Viverra civetta)…

As a matter of fact….These wild animals are considered great delicacies in China…and are also bred there for human consumption…Kept in squalid surroundings…stacked cage upon cage…they can be found in markets throughout southern China…

Most Exotic Coffee Ever Made – Civet

For the actual lovers of this beverage called ‘coffee’…The senses…the taste buds are never satiated…Instead their craving increases with every passing hour..

I have had so many friends who were absolute caffeine addicts…So much that they would get up in the middle of the night (literally) and go somewhere…I wondered if they were possessed! I had to follow them and used to find them preparing coffee for themselves…The ones who were pretty well-off…used to name brands of coffee I had never heard before in life…There was this friend of mine whose father was businessman…I remember whenever I used to go to her place to see her..she used to serve me this exotic and irresistibly rich and creamy smelling coffee…I too soon became the fan of the beverage…thanks to her religious serving…I asked her which coffee it was…though knowing that I would surely not have heard the name before…”Civet” she replied…

I searched for it and found ample information…about Civet coffee of course…In Indonesia…the country best known for this type of coffee…”kopi luwak” translates literally as “civet coffee.”…And just to clarify…Kopi Luwak is a process…not a type of coffee…

As a matter of fact…Most coffees are either named after the species or region or both take for example…

  • Lintong Arabica
  • Kona
  • Sulawesi Toraja Peaberry
  • Costa Rican Terrazu

And my tongue will get tangled in an attempt to pronounce these!

Anyway…There are four coffee species grown commercially…and hundreds of coffee growing regions…It refers to any coffee that has been consumed by a Palm Civet…a shy and peaceful relative of the mongoose that is found primarily in Indonesia and the Philippines…Palm Civets (formally called…Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) are of the civet family and are not actually cats…foxes or weasels

Any coffee bean consumed by a civet becomes “kopi luwak.”…If one civet is eating Arabica and another is eating Robusta…the flavour profile of each coffee will be quite different….However…both coffees will share the unique characteristics brought about by the enzyme action –

  • hints of chocolate
  • absence of bitterness
  • accentuated flavour profile
  • uniquely pleasant persistence on the palate

These changes have been documented and catalogued by a number of university studies…

Kopi Luwak coffees are such that enable you to experience the Kopi Luwak process on all four of the major commercial species of coffee and several different cultivating regions…

Basically…Coffee grows as a seed inside a fruit that resembles a cherry…The Palm Civet is a night-time forager who considers the ripest and sweetest coffee cherries to be a delicacy…which she swallows whole…She only wants the fruit…so the hard green coffee beans are passed through undigested…They are then gathered up…thoroughly cleaned…and roasted like regular coffee beans…Palm Civets have unique natural enzymes in their bellies that permeate the celluloid structure of the hard coffee beans and make it possible for the release during brewing of up to 25 or more otherwise unreachable flavour elements….Also…they neutralize many of the coffee’s bitter oils…

The result is the world’s smoothest and most flavourful coffee…with exceptionally pleasant recall on the senses…a rare effect that is experienced only with the finest and freshest coffees…

Less Known Of Civet

I am pretty sure the points I’ll be presenting before you today about Civet…are not known to you…Read and get surprised…

Each African Civet secretes up to 4g of musk every week…which is normally collected from African Civets in the wild…However…the capturing and keeping of African Civets for their musk is not unknown and is said to be an incredibly cruel industry….Today…few perfumes still contain actual musk from the glands of an African Civet as many scents today are easily reproduced artificially…Although it is a protected yet not an endangered animal…the African Civet populations have also been severely affected by Human hunters…who hunt these little carnivores to simply add their skin to the trophy cabinet….

The African Civet is found in a variety of habitats on the African continent…with its range extending from coast to coast in sub-Saharan Africa….African Civets are most commonly found in tropical forests and jungles and areas where there is plenty of dense vegetation to provide both cover and animals that the African Civets feeds on….African Civets are never found in arid regions and always must be in an area which has a good water source….Despite this though…it is not uncommon for African Civets to be found along rivers that lead into the more arid regions…They are capable swimmers and often spend their time hunting and resting in the trees as well as on the ground…

The African Civet is a solitary animal that only comes out under the cover of night to hunt and catch food….These nocturnal animals are primarily tree-dwelling creatures that spend most of the daylight hours resting in the safety of the trees high above….African Civets tend to be most active just after sunset but tend to hunt in areas that still provide plenty of cover….Despite being generally very solitary creatures…the African Civet has been known to gather in groups of up to 15 members particularly during the mating season….They are also highly territorial animalsmarking their boundaries with the scent released by their perineal glands….

Civet Oil – The Spiritual Catalyst

Nothing on earth can be more peaceful than feeling our mere presence…feeling our breath…being able to hear every beat of our heart…feeling that light thump every time our pulse hits the inside…and possibly the best reason to reach such a stage of oneness with oneself is through the medium of yoga…as it is called by Indians…

This form has become illustrious in today’s world…the trend of doing yoga is proliferating…be it for weight loss…for concentration…or just to get a spiritual high…

But probably one thing that most of the yoga-doers miss out is the ambience needed to practice it…yes surely it has to be done in isolation…on the floor…with a mat…but another thing that is extremely essential but yet neglected is…the scent that the atmosphere should bear when one is practising yoga…light…might…mesmerizing…

Some fragrance that itself has the ability to give you a new high…a fragrance as close to Civet Essential Oil…

The scent of this oil…Rich…musky…intoxicatingly indulgent…giving the senses a spiritual roller-coaster…And well…just to tell you…Civet indeed is used for the very purpose…I mean spiritual one…

It’s highlighted spiritual properties being…

  • Lust
  • Love
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Taurus
  • Cat Magic

As far as obtaining is spiritual oil is concerned…Real Civet is a glandular secretion obtained from small pockets next to the testicals of the Civet cat….

It is a powerful scent and very powerful magically…No need to be scared though…But it cannot be denied…that it indeed is magical in its effects on the senses…owing to its exotic and unusual and gripping scent…
It has been used for centuries to attract the opposite sex…and for various kinds of not so good magic…

Like I mentioned…Civet is extensively used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…And in fact it is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits…Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavours of energy to the fore….

If we come up a little and discuss substantially about the effects of aromatic influences on the human senses…Then very frankly…Little has been written on the practicalities of aromatics in ritual…The odd items which have appeared in print have been dogmatic and unutterably inaccurate….So few people are involved in magic as well as being skilled in the use of aromatics that written information has always been plagiarised from previous inaccurate sources instead of being researched and tested…

The sense of smell is grossly underrated by anyone who has not sat down and deliberately considered its effects….To such a person the ability to smell something is merely an adjunct to what is considered the more important gates of perception i.e. the other four physical senses….No magician can afford to fall into this trap…The sense of smell can be the source of subtle conditioning…intended or accidental and in magical ritual the use of incenses and fragrant oils cannot be overestimated…the sense of smell being more evocative than any other…

Because of their power to elicit specific responses in the body and psyche…perfumes have…through the age…occupied an important part in ritual…The Magical and Ritual Use of Perfumes shows how scents can become the very essence of magic…providing direct access to the emotional centres of the brain and memory….

Harmless Natural Air-Freshener – Civet Oil

I remember I was once trapped in this movie-like situation…it was a weekend and I was doing the vacuum and cleaning of the house…Mainly because there was this strong stench that was coming from some corner of the house that had driven me nuts seriously and induced nausea…So I was frantically searching what was it that was smelling so horrid…To make me even more flustered…certain relatives called up to ask for a visit…I obviously couldn’t refuse…And that made me even more frustrated…

Finally! I saw some bloody and fleshy thing was lying under my settee…I freaked out…it was a mouse..! I immediately threw it…but the problem lingered…or should I say the smell…nah…the STENCH lingered on!

I was so incapacitated with the smell that I started to hyperventilate…Then I remembered that I was gifted this room freshener…an exotic one…on my birthday…I washed the area where the mouse had lain…Then sprayed the magic in the room!

I won’t be lying if I say that the room smelled like some rich…exotic perfume shop!

Finally I heaved a sigh of relief!

Did I not tell you what that magic spray was?

Well…It was…Civet Essential Oil room freshener….

Air freshener…hmm…the concept of it…Next to pharmaceuticals…nothing in recent years has been pushed harder upon us than the vast array of indoor chemical air fresheners or room deodorizers…These products include –

  • Metered sprays
  • Plug-ins
  • Sticks
  • Wicks
  • Mists
  • Aerosols
  • Carpet cleaners
  • Scented candles
  • Scented stones

There’s virtually no place in the American business world that not only has these fresheners in every bathroom…but they’re also in lobbies…hallways…office spaces and…most frightening…nurseries worldwide…

I won’t say an exact history of air fresheners but yes….I would call civet…the mother of all air fresheners and because of amazing fragrances like civet…the perfume industry has gone notches higher than where it initially stood….

Know about the animal civet? Well…The civet has been the source of a highly-valued musk…used as a stabilizing agent in perfumes…Both male and female civets produce strong-smelling excretions….Although civets were at one time killed for their musk…they more recently have been recycled for this purpose….The perfume…also called civet…is achieved by scrapping the civet’s perianal glands…

Though the fact can’t be altered that collecting the perfume is a painful process for the live animals…but but but…as some might be thinking…it does NOT kill them!

The animals are kept in tiny cages for years and every few days the keepers scrape the civet out of the anal sacs….The secretion is then purified in alcohol…and then the perfume is diluted and used in minute quantities…In strong amounts…the musk can provoke vomiting in humans…

And that is how this oil is obtained…And to tell you it is one the most expensive and rich fragrances ruling the earth presently…both…in terms of dosh as well as quality…

Nature’s Real Perfume – Civet Oil

I am an absolute fan of rich…long-lasting smells…Even when it was an after-shave’s smell that I was fond of…I used to take dad’s bottle…and smell it for long it the time that smell actually didn’t settle in my nose…

Talking about perfumes…Natural perfumes are crafted with sumptuous natural essences and pure bases….Botanical essences like essential oils and absolutes made from

  • Flowers
  • Leaves
  • Trees
  • Fruits
  • Nuts
  • Resins

And hence these are the main odorants used in composing this type of perfumes…

Alright…And then comes the other groups of essences that are derived from animal by products…
Examples of this are -

  • The Civet oil…an oily substance secreted by the Civet cat
  • Ambergris…a solid…waxy compound from the Sperm whale

Professionally…most natural perfumers prefer to work with botanical essences exclusively for ethical reason….
Fortunately…in general perfumery…there are many synthetic…nature identical or similar alternatives for replacing most of the animal odour notes…

The process of making pure perfume is one of the most special activities to partake in…It’s simply magical to be able to craft perfumes that are hauntingly captivating…with intoxicating note…or blends that are intense and passionate…boldly permeating the wearer’s environment….

However…one of the biggest challenges of natural perfumery is the matter of consistency in the quality of the aromatic essences used in the blends….
This can vary year to year…depending on ecological factors and each year’s harvest…A rose plantation that produced abundant premium grade absolute oil one year might have a poor harvest the following year…And even the availability of the animals such as civets…
This difference will reflect in your blends if that’s where you get your regular supply from…

In the blending process…the aromatic oils are added to the perfume base depending on the type of perfume that is being made…For perfume oil…the base could be Jojoba oil…solid perfumes can have a base of Jojoba Oil and Bees wax and Alcohol based perfumes can be made with pure grain alcohol….

Once the blending stage is over…oil based and solid perfumes can be used right away…but it wouldn’t hurt to leave the perfume to age for a couple of weeks before using it….
Alcohol based perfumes on the other hand, would need to be aged for 4-6 weeks to allow the fragrance to fully mature and any harsh notes to round out and allow the blend to blossom….

After aging…you will need to filter this type of perfume to remove any sediment that might be in i…so you can produce a clear liquid…
Whatever type of perfume you are making…working with natural essentials oils is always a beautiful experience…filled with whimsical discoveries and aromatic fantasies…

That was all about Civet and perfume making…

Exotic Aromatherapy Oil – Civet Essential Oil

This is a personal recommendation…The mental blockages and blues…You know the times when you feel low for no reason…you scrutinize all the events of the day that you went through but cannot pick any one that is making you feel so drained and low…

Those are the times when either you should put on the ear-plugs…tune on your favourite songs and slip in a world of unrealism…or you can go a step-ahead…by not simply extricating from the blues…you can do something to amend it…maybe a massage…or aromatherapy…

Are you clear on the concepts of aromatherapy…? If not…I am there to help….Because you’ll be able to resort to it more willingly and with more conviction when you thoroughly know the ins and outs of it…

Basically…Aromatherapy is the ancient science of healing…relaxing and energizing by the use of plants or animals…and their parts…

What it actually does is that it helps is alleviating stress and speeding up healing….Healing of the body…the mind…or the soul…be it any kind of damage….The essential oils used…like the Civet Essential Oil….that takes the might to a new high through its amazingly rich and expensive smell…

This oil can be inhaled…used on clothes…or maybe as room-fresheners….

As far as the extraction of this civet oil is concerned…Natural civet is derived from the musky secretion of an African cat….Because of cost and the necessity of destroying these animals in order to gain the essential…true civet is not readily available…There are some excellent synthetic…however…that capture the essence of the original…Here it might be noted that…in the application of synthetic oils…it is absolutely crucial to know the quality of your commercial supplier…While many oil providers do not even carry this particular scent…So be careful…One version might be a good base oil….Although it captures the spirit of the essence…it is very mild…The other is a powerfully scented blend….Where it might take an entire dram…or 1/8 ounce…of the first variation…the second would be overstated if more than 3 drops are used in an oil formula…

Planetary Influence of this is Venus….Secondary Planet of it is Mars

Although Mars is listed as a secondary planet…it should be under-stood that this is done because of its association with passion….Civet is a very female scent….While it may affect the male intensel…it is of and by the feminine nature….

Elemental Association…Earth

Secondary Element…Water

Zodiac Influence…Taurus

What it does is that it awakens self-confidence…particularly in women…and also…arouses sexuality…And is secretly helpful in frigidity and female sexual disorders…

One secret tool of women for attracting men Attracts men…When used in combination with other love oil…it is said to make women irresistible to men….Ahem! Yes pretty much…

Arousing Natural Oil – Civet

Rekindling the fire with the help of a fragrance is the cheapest and safest thing to do (Why! Estimate those surgeries and artificially arousing toys for yourself!)….Civet essential oil is probably the best matchstick you can get to do the same…

Don’t be apprehensive about it…Civet has been used in perfumery since very old times in diverse cultures…and there are references to it being used as a perfume ingredient since at least as far back as the 17th century….It continued to be used until recent time…in famous perfumes such as those by

  • Chanel
  • Lancome
  • Cartier

Chanel substituted civet with a synthetic ingredient as of 1998….So aren’t those some really ‘heavy’ names?

Hmm….I’ll dig a little in history to make your belief firmer….Civet was described as an aphrodisiac scent by a number of writers of the 19th century…however its reputation as an aphrodisiac may have much earlier origins…Read on…

Robert Lovell’s famous 1661 text Sive Panzoologicomineralogia…Or a Complete History of Animals and Minerals states…Applied to the clitoris…it caused great delectation in Women….Lovell is not the only writer of the 17th century to have held views that civet…used to anoint the genital…had an aphrodisiac effect…and there is also mention of it being applied to the male parts in order to bring greater pleasure to lovemaking….Civet was also used medicinally in that age for a number of conditions….

Numerous other texts of the 19th century in particular described civet as an aphrodisiac scent….The London Medical and Surgical Journal of 1835…listing a large number of the substances considered aphrodisiac through the ages…writes of civet that it was said to be of undoubted efficacy….

However…by the 1890s civet appears to have been somewhat ‘downgraded’ as a potential aphrodisiac…though the basis for this is not clearly stated….The latter 19th century was one in which attitudes to old myth and fable changed…due in part to the work of Darwin….Once science had found a solid foundation from which to attack religion…it spared little of ancient fable…lore and mystery…all of which were consigned to be nothing more than mere superstition…and much that was good…if not immediately able to be proved…was vehemently discarded…In technical terminology…this is known as throwing the baby out with the bath water…

Phew! That was some rich history…Finally coming back to civet….Civet musk is one of several animal secretions that have been used in perfumery…Others include-

  • Castoreum (from the beaver)
  • Musk (from the musk deer)
  • Moschus moschatus
  • Ambergris

In a number of cases…including that of the civet…these products are made from the scent glands of the creature…

Looking at the history of use of this ingredient in connection what is known about pheromone…it seems likely that the aphrodisiac legend of civet scent has some basis…however science considers it far from proven…

Both pressure from animal rights groups and the availability of synthetic alternatives have…rightly…done much to curtail the use of animal musk…
