Civet Perfume – Where it started…

Ever tried to ponder over the fact that how when and where this trend of applying perfumes started?

Yeah…I mean think about it right from the ‘early man’ age…what was it that must have induced the use of good smell to attract the opposite sex…I had read somewhere it is something which was practiced by animals and then humans adopted the same…to use a scent to attract partners…

The most widely used fragrance being…Civet essential oil…Perfume comes from the Latin “per” meaning “through” and “fumum” or “smoke”…Many ancient perfumes were made by extracting natural oils from plants through pressing and steaming…The oil was then burned to scent the air…Today…most perfume is used to scent bar soaps….Some products are even perfumed with industrial odorants to mask unpleasant smells or to appear “unscented”…

While fragrant liquids used for the body are often considered perfume…true perfumes are defined as extracts or essences and contain a percentage of oil distilled in alcohol…Water is also used…The United States is the world’s largest perfume market with annual sales totaling several billions of dollars….And their chief ingredient being the most expensive and the best Civet Essential oil…

Perfumes today are being made and used in different ways than in previous centuries…Perfumes are being manufactured more and more frequently with synthetic chemicals rather than natural oils…Less concentrated forms of perfume are also becoming increasingly popular…Combined…these factors decrease the cost of the scents…encouraging more widespread and frequent…often daily…use…

Not only all of that but also using perfume to heal…make people feel good…and improve relationships between the sexes are the new frontiers being explored by the industry…The sense of smell is considered a right brain activity…which rules emotions…memory…and creativity….Aromatherapy smelling oils and fragrances to cure physical and emotional problems being revived to help balance hormonal and body energy….The theory behind aromatherapy states that using essential oils helps bolster the immune system when inhaled or applied topically…Smelling sweet smells also affects one’s mood and can be used as a form of psychotherapy….And this is especially true for nature’s best and pet oil Civet essential oil…

Like aromatherapy…more research is being conducted to synthesize human perfume hat is…the body scents we produce to attract or repel other humans…We…the humans…like other mammals…release pheromones to attract the opposite sex…New perfumes are being created to duplicate the effect of pheromones and stimulate sexual arousal receptors in the brain…Not only may the perfumes of the future help people cover up “bad” smells…they could improve their physical and emotional well-being as well as their sex lives…And by saying that…I mean it…

Civet Oil – Traditional Secret Uses

Oils that are aphrodisiac in nature and highly strong in smell have always had some unusual and secret uses in the past…Just one such oil is civet…

And yes I mean Civet Essential Oil…Civet oil is used to attract the opposite sex…They are supposed signify lust and love…True civet oil was from a Civet male cat…endangered species…It was a glandular secretion from small pockets next to testicles…Today civet oils are produced synthetically…They are rich and have a musky scent…

Over time civet oil has had many uses…One is to perfume the body…the other is for medical uses…

Civet oil is used in perfumes…lotions and soaps…for natural beauty…civet oils have been used since the Egyptians used it…

Civet is musk like fragrance…it can be used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…but is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits… Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavours of energy to the fore…This is a pure anointing oil for external use only…

Primarily nocturnal foragers with semi arboreal and arboreal habits…civets typically ambush their prey…During the day…civets usually rest in a hollow tree…rock crevice or empty…shallow burrow…They are solitary animals maintaining a wide home range…by scent marking trees on the borders of their territory…The term “civet” is derived from an Arabic word describing the oily fluid and its odor secreted by the perineal glands…Scent marking is important in civet communication…but the method differs among species from passively passing the scent when moving about causing the gland to rub vegetation..to squatting and then wiping or rubbing the gland on the ground or some prominent object…

Civet oil has been used in the perfume industry for centuries and has been recorded as being imported from Africa by King Solomon in the tenth century B.C. Once refined…Civet oil is prized for its odor and long lasting properties…Civet oil is also valued for its medicinal uses which include the reduction of perspiration…a cure for some skin disorders and claims of aphrodisiac powers…Although the development of sensitive chemical substitutes has decreased the value of civet oil…it is still a part of some East African and Oriental economies…

Civet – The Majestic Animal Smell

The animal Civet is no doubt very majestic…More so because of the expensive benefits it does to us…I mean the expensive provisions we are bestowed upon by this animal…

Civet is a musk like fragrance…it can be used for protection and spiritual enlightenment if used in the proper manner…but is mainly directed toward more sensual pursuits…Depending on which part of the body you anoint…civet brings different flavours of energy to the fore….This is a pure anointing oil for external use only…

Though little is known about its biology and ecology…there are some descriptions of habitat use…it once inhabited lowland forests…lowland swamp and riparian forests in the coastal plain districts of Western Ghats – although now it appears to be confined to thickets in cashew plantations and to highly degraded lowland forests in northern Kerala…It has been found in lowland riparian forests in the coastal plain districts…The species is nocturnal and probably elusive

Natural forests have completely disappeared in the entire stretch of coastal Western Ghats…thus the present vegetation is of secondary origin and is mostly plantations…Of these…cashew plantations are the least disturbed…as they are not weeded…providing a dense understory of shrubs and grasses for this terrestrial species to take refuge in…However….most records from 1960-1990 were in valleys around riparian areas…suggesting that this species is dependent of shallow water courses where it may forage at night…

Civet oil is derived from civets…The animal I had been talking about in this article….They can be found in Africa and Asia….Civets are cat-like animals…and belong to the order Feliformia…which also holds –

  • Lions
  • Tigers
  • Hyenas
  • Domestic cats

Less Known Of Civet

I am pretty sure the points I’ll be presenting before you today about Civet…are not known to you…Read and get surprised…

Each African Civet secretes up to 4g of musk every week…which is normally collected from African Civets in the wild…However…the capturing and keeping of African Civets for their musk is not unknown and is said to be an incredibly cruel industry….Today…few perfumes still contain actual musk from the glands of an African Civet as many scents today are easily reproduced artificially…Although it is a protected yet not an endangered animal…the African Civet populations have also been severely affected by Human hunters…who hunt these little carnivores to simply add their skin to the trophy cabinet….

The African Civet is found in a variety of habitats on the African continent…with its range extending from coast to coast in sub-Saharan Africa….African Civets are most commonly found in tropical forests and jungles and areas where there is plenty of dense vegetation to provide both cover and animals that the African Civets feeds on….African Civets are never found in arid regions and always must be in an area which has a good water source….Despite this though…it is not uncommon for African Civets to be found along rivers that lead into the more arid regions…They are capable swimmers and often spend their time hunting and resting in the trees as well as on the ground…

The African Civet is a solitary animal that only comes out under the cover of night to hunt and catch food….These nocturnal animals are primarily tree-dwelling creatures that spend most of the daylight hours resting in the safety of the trees high above….African Civets tend to be most active just after sunset but tend to hunt in areas that still provide plenty of cover….Despite being generally very solitary creatures…the African Civet has been known to gather in groups of up to 15 members particularly during the mating season….They are also highly territorial animalsmarking their boundaries with the scent released by their perineal glands….

Civet – The Cat

Know the about the wild and amazing cat Civet?

Very frankly…I had not even heard about it before…Read the name first time in some fashion magazine that bore information about ladies perfume…Initially I thought it had something to do just with oils…Later I realized as to where that oil was obtained from…Civet cat…

Hmm…This African Civet is a large species of Civet found across sub-Saharan Africa….The African Civet is the only remaining member in its genetic group and is considered to be the largest Civet-like animal on the African continent….Despite their cat-like appearance and behaviours…the African Civets are not felines at all but are in fact…more closely related to other small carnivores including Weasels and MongoosesThe African Civet is most well known for the musk that it secretes to mark its territory called Civetone…which has been used in the manufacturing of perfumes for centuries…and it’s striking black and white markings…make the African Civet one of the easiest Civet species to identify…

One of the African Civet’s most distinctive features are the black and white markings on their fur and grey face…which along with the black band around their eyes…gives these animals a Raccoon-like appearance….The similarity is only heightened by the fact that the African Civet’s hind legs are quite a bit longer than the front legs…making its stance very different to that of a Mongoose….The average adult African Civet has a body length of around 70cm with nearly the same length tail on top of that….The paws of the African Civet each have five digits with non-retractable claws to enable the Civet to move about in the trees more easily…

The musk secreted by the glands close to the African Civet’s reproductive organs has been collected by Humans for hundreds of years…In its concentrated form,…the smell is said to be quite offensive to people…but much more pleasant once diluted…It was this scent that became one of the ingredients in some of the most expensive perfumes in the world and made the African Civet a well-known African animal…African Civets are known to carry the rabies disease…which is contracted through contact with an already infected animal….The African Civet is also known to use designated areas around its territory…where it is able to go to the toilet…

Nature’s Real Perfume – Civet Oil

I am an absolute fan of rich…long-lasting smells…Even when it was an after-shave’s smell that I was fond of…I used to take dad’s bottle…and smell it for long it the time that smell actually didn’t settle in my nose…

Talking about perfumes…Natural perfumes are crafted with sumptuous natural essences and pure bases….Botanical essences like essential oils and absolutes made from

  • Flowers
  • Leaves
  • Trees
  • Fruits
  • Nuts
  • Resins

And hence these are the main odorants used in composing this type of perfumes…

Alright…And then comes the other groups of essences that are derived from animal by products…
Examples of this are -

  • The Civet oil…an oily substance secreted by the Civet cat
  • Ambergris…a solid…waxy compound from the Sperm whale

Professionally…most natural perfumers prefer to work with botanical essences exclusively for ethical reason….
Fortunately…in general perfumery…there are many synthetic…nature identical or similar alternatives for replacing most of the animal odour notes…

The process of making pure perfume is one of the most special activities to partake in…It’s simply magical to be able to craft perfumes that are hauntingly captivating…with intoxicating note…or blends that are intense and passionate…boldly permeating the wearer’s environment….

However…one of the biggest challenges of natural perfumery is the matter of consistency in the quality of the aromatic essences used in the blends….
This can vary year to year…depending on ecological factors and each year’s harvest…A rose plantation that produced abundant premium grade absolute oil one year might have a poor harvest the following year…And even the availability of the animals such as civets…
This difference will reflect in your blends if that’s where you get your regular supply from…

In the blending process…the aromatic oils are added to the perfume base depending on the type of perfume that is being made…For perfume oil…the base could be Jojoba oil…solid perfumes can have a base of Jojoba Oil and Bees wax and Alcohol based perfumes can be made with pure grain alcohol….

Once the blending stage is over…oil based and solid perfumes can be used right away…but it wouldn’t hurt to leave the perfume to age for a couple of weeks before using it….
Alcohol based perfumes on the other hand, would need to be aged for 4-6 weeks to allow the fragrance to fully mature and any harsh notes to round out and allow the blend to blossom….

After aging…you will need to filter this type of perfume to remove any sediment that might be in i…so you can produce a clear liquid…
Whatever type of perfume you are making…working with natural essentials oils is always a beautiful experience…filled with whimsical discoveries and aromatic fantasies…

That was all about Civet and perfume making…

Exotic Aromatherapy Oil – Civet Essential Oil

This is a personal recommendation…The mental blockages and blues…You know the times when you feel low for no reason…you scrutinize all the events of the day that you went through but cannot pick any one that is making you feel so drained and low…

Those are the times when either you should put on the ear-plugs…tune on your favourite songs and slip in a world of unrealism…or you can go a step-ahead…by not simply extricating from the blues…you can do something to amend it…maybe a massage…or aromatherapy…

This oil can be inhaled…used on clothes…or maybe as room-fresheners….

As far as the extraction of this civet oil is concerned…Natural civet is derived from the musky secretion of an African cat….Because of cost and the necessity of destroying these animals in order to gain the essential…true civet is not readily available…There are some excellent synthetic…however…that capture the essence of the original…Here it might be noted that…in the application of synthetic oils…it is absolutely crucial to know the quality of your commercial supplier…While many oil providers do not even carry this particular scent…So be careful…One version might be a good base oil….Although it captures the spirit of the essence…it is very mild…The other is a powerfully scented blend….Where it might take an entire dram…or 1/8 ounce…of the first variation…the second would be overstated if more than 3 drops are used in an oil formula…

Planetary Influence of this is Venus….Secondary Planet of it is Mars

Although Mars is listed as a secondary planet…it should be under-stood that this is done because of its association with passion….Civet is a very female scent….While it may affect the male intensel…it is of and by the feminine nature….

Elemental Association…Earth

Secondary Element…Water

Zodiac Influence…Taurus

What it does is that it awakens self-confidence…particularly in women…and also…arouses sexuality…And is secretly helpful in frigidity and female sexual disorders…

Civet Essential Oil – Perfumed Perspiration Blocker

Sweat patches…The mixed smell of sweat and perfume…boils in the armpits…blackening of the areas where artificial smells are applied…Frankly…Have dealt with all…I found my magical spray…I feel it is time for you too to discover it…

My magical spray was Civet Essential Oil…But before we get into its details…Understand the condition of sweating…perspiration…

Excessive sweating is also known as hyperhidrosis….This is quite a common disorder which an estimated 3 percent of all Americans experience….Although it does not seem to be much of a big deal…it actually is for people suffering it….Sweating may flush toxins away…but it could cause significant unhappiness too…especially if it’s profuse….

Different parts of the body may sweat enormously and may start in different stages of one’s life….Palm and sole hyperhidrosis may start as early as childhood while underarm hyperhidrosis often starts around the age of puberty….When left untreated…these problems may go on throughout the person’s life…

Hyperhidrosis may be caused by some metabolic…neurological…or systematic diseases….However…most cases happen in individuals who are rather healthy….Two common triggers of this disorder are heat and strong emotions….However…once hyperhidrosis occurs…sufferers tend to sweat almost all the time…no matter what their moods are…regardless of the weather…

Perfume is made from about 78% to 95% of specially denatured ethyl alcohol and a remainder of essential oils…And also Perfume is the costliest form of fragrance with 22% of essential oils…

Typical animal products used in perfume include musk from the male musk deer…ambergris from sperm whales…castoreum a secretion of the beaver and civet from the civet cat….All are used as fixatives and add an indefinable mystery to the smell at the same time…

You know my magical fragrance…Civet…The term “civet” is derived from an Arabic word describing the oily fluid and its odor secreted by the perineal glands….Scent marking is important in civet communication…but the method differs among species from passively passing the scent when moving about causing the gland to rub vegetation…to squatting and then wiping or rubbing the gland on the ground or some prominent object…
