Civet – The Perfumed Cat

Only a countable number of things on earth are blessed with such rare and great qualities that that the human population has nothing else to do than to just bow to the grandeur…Civet is one such cat…with amazing smell…read on to explore…

You know…There are 19 species of true civets and genets classified in the subfamily Viverrinae…One of the best known is the African civet…A rather large…heavily built…long-bodied and long-legged carnivore…it is the most doglike viverrid…Preferring to be near water…it lives in a variety of habitats ranging from moist tropical forest to dry scrub savannah….It is considered terrestrial…climbing trees only in an emergency such as when hunted…The African civet hunts exclusively on the ground at night…resting in thickets or burrows during the day….An opportunistic and omnivorous predator…it will eat carrion, but prefers small mammals….

African civets deposit their droppings in one place creating middens or “civetries.” Although typically found at territorial boundaries…they also mark their territory using their perineal gland…

Coming to the smell of  Civet essential oil…Perfumers call the ingredients used to make a scent last “fixatives”…Whether synthetic or natural…perfume fixatives hold a scent together and keep it from fleeing once the liquid evaporates on the skin…

  • Most perfumes can be divided into base…middle and top notes…with each “note” consisting of two to six ingredients..Generally speaking…the earthier..deep scents of the base notes act as fixatives…
  • Not only do base notes themselves linger on the skin longer than the middle and top notes…but they preserve the entire perfume blend by slowing evaporation…Dozens of fixative ingredients exist…falling into three major categories…

Civet is an indispensible ingredient in perfumery…Natural Civet is an animal product…Although not everyone condone the use of animal products in perfumery…But all do recognize the importance of this ingredient…In an olfactory sense…Civet Artificial is aroma-identical to the natural material and easier and kinder to use….

Though uncommon today…musk…ambergris and castoreum once ruled the perfume industry as pheromone-rich ingredients that lighten and diffuse effect on the perfume blend…Many perfumers still use the oil from the civet…cousin to the mongoose…Like I’ve already explained before…Mind you…The animal is not killed during the collection process….

Civet…The Animal…The Oil

Slew of years from today…My maid…I remember used to confide in me big time…And once she disclosed to me that she could tell from the fragrance that sir (my father) wore as to where we were heading for…Like she knew dad wore musk only to exquisite and grand occasions…and then some lighter scents to normal get-togethers…It kind of freaked me out…But later on when I grew mature I could do that myself…The fragrance gets trapped in head….Especially if it is as exotic as musk….or maybe civet….

Know much about civet?

Well very frankly…I didn’t…not even that it was an animal…Musk Okay yeah I knew…but not civet…

It is my idea…that before one gets down to using anything…Be it electronics…apparels or even food or maybe as meagre as oil…the person should be thoroughly aware of its being…Today I take this responsibility to introduce you to the most exotic fragrance ever…Civet essential oil…So that when you do use it…you do not hold any doubts about it…

Hmm….The very first shocker….Civet oil is not extracted from a plant or a herb! As I am sure you might have thought…Just like I did…I confess it…Because there is this word ‘essential’ added to it so you might taken it for a veggie-veggie herb oil…But alas! It is not…But no need of getting disappointed…Read on…It is extracted from small to medium-sized carnivores called as civets! Yes it is obtained from a living organism….Civets are basically animals belonging to the Viverridae animal family…This family includes other members like –

  • Mongooses
  • Linsangs
  • Genets

Amazingly enough there are more than 35 species of civets…Civets are generally found in the temperate deciduous forests….These animals vary in size and appearance according to their species…

This Civet is more or less like a cat…I mean that is how it looks…catty…It has

  • Slender body
  • Long nose
  • Short legs
  • Long furry tail
  • Pointed ears

The natural distribution of this animal is spread in the temperate climatic conditions and is restricted to the warmer areas…The term ‘Civet’ is derived from an Arabic word which means the oily fluid and its odour secreted by perineal glands

As far as the habits of these furry creatures are concerned….Civets are nocturnal foragers…what I mean is that they preys on(NO! Not to God with folded hands! Okay I know it is lame) at night…that have semi-arboreal and arboreal habits…Arboreal means those animals that live in trees….These animals rest in a hollow tree…shallow burrow or a rock crevice during the day time….

Understand….The methods of extracting the scent from the Civets differ…Few of the species passes the scent passively when moving….This happens when their glands rub vegetation….You know like they touch and rub against a plant or tree…Few others pass the scent by squatting…rubbing or wiping the gland on the ground or on any object….The African civets are said to be the best among the species….They are found with two-spotted palm….This type of Civets spend most their time in the forest canopy…African Civets generally rely on –

  • Fruits
  • Insects
  • Small mammals
  • Lizards
  • Birds

The lifestyles of Civets are assisted by their hairless soles…sharp curved claws…partially fused toes that support climbing the trees….Few species of Civets are also said to swim and prey fish and few other amphibians…

Hmm…Finally coming to Civet oil…Well…This oil is nothing but the glandular secretion from the small pockets that are located near the testicles…This oil was initially extracted from the Civet male cat….But now Civet oil is produced synthetically…This rich oil has a musky scent…This mesmerizing scent is used to attract the opposite sex….It is still used in many parts of the world for this purpose….Civet oil often signifies love and lust….

It is a clinging history of this exotic oil actually that….It  is used to foster

  • Love
  • Lust
  • sexual feelings

It helps in attracting the opposite sex with its incredible fragrance…Like I just mentioned in the previous paragraph… Civet oil has been used in the perfume industry for centuries together….It is said that this oil was imported by King Solomon from Africa….This oil has also proved effective in treating certain skin disorders and helps in bringing down perspiration….

Hmm…I think you’ve known enough of it…So go through our reference links now…
